Imagine Mataroa Gin

THE STORY OF MATAROA

Once upon a Chamomile, from the magnificent coasts of Cyprus, there is a mighty French Lavender, delicate, yet strong, who meets with the Tears of the resilient Greek Mastic Resin in the unique south part of Chios Island.

The three of them board on the same bottle and start traveling the coasts.

Soon enough, a delicate Moroccan Mandarin, a joyous Spanish Orange and a sophisticated Italian Orris Root board along.

In the beginning, each one wants to speak out, with the melody of its taste and smell rushing and conquering. But the gathering is yet to be complete.

Read the rest of the story

As the journey continues, the company broadens: gentle French Angelica Root, mystical Syrian Bay Leaf and spicy Tunisian Coriander hop on, to be soon accompanied by sparkling Egyptian Lemon Peels and earthy Croatian Juniper Berries. The smell explodes and the taste too, with the addition of the heavenly sweet Turkish Liquorice.

Now, the company is complete.

With its twelve one-of-a-kind passengers, the bottle sets for Greece, the land where the Mataroa blending takes place.

And the savory trip of the Mataroa Mediterranean Gin begins.

Welcome on board.

Τhe challenging years after World War II, Mataroa, a ship under the flag of New Zealand made 2 important trips across the Mediterranean Sea.

In August 1945, Mataroa travelled from Marseilles to Haifa, with 173 children on board, all Hebrew refugees saved by the OSE (Œuvre de secours aux enfants) Organization.

In December 1945, Mataroa was chartered by the director of the French Institute of Athens to board a significant number of students (most of them scholars of the french state), in order to help them flea political prosecutions: philosophers Kornelios Kastoriadis and Kostas Axelos, painter Nelly Andrikopoulou, sculptor Kostas Koulentianos, writer Mimika Kranaki, philologist Emmanuel Kriaras, architect Georges Kandilis, just to name a few, were among the list of its later famous passengers.

In 2019, Mataroa becomes the inspiration for Mataroa Mediterranean Dry Gin. The ship is transformed into a bottle and the load is not people, but 12 precious ingredients from the Mediterranean coast. As for the premium blend, it symbolizes the strength of the human spirit, the devotion to excellence and the continuity of this unique land.
